I actually don’t have much to talk about this week EXCEPT a little bit of progress on honeymoon Leia.
I can finally see it coming together!
Sleeves!
So last week I mentioned I gave up on lining the skirt and just did french seams. I planned to finish the edges with white bias tape – machine sewn on the edge and then flipped up and finished by hand so the bias tape is only seen on the inside. Well I got all of the bias tape machine sewn on and went and sat downstairs to start finishing it by hand… and decided I didn’t like how it looked. The blind hem stitches in this fabric were just too visible.
So back to the drawing board, I got 5 yards of cotton thursday night, completely took apart the main skirt again, cleaned it up, ironed it out, and used the skirt panels to cut out new lining.
I took my time re-assembling everything this time. Starting with the center back main layer, then the lining layer – made sure they matched up before moving onto the next panels, and so on and so forth. Doing it one step a time like that and having everything clearly marked helped make it where they actually matched up this time!!
That’s what I spent most of saturday doing. Got the lining all attached, understitched and pressed. It’s fine. I just spent 2 weeks going back and forth on this.
I also got the sleeves finished and in this case I DID finish the edge with bias tape. Decided I didn’t care if the pinpricks showed here. I really didn’t want to line the sleeves and make them heavier looking than they already are.
Last night I finally got to pin the skirt panel to the top!
I do need to take up the lavender waist drape piece, it’s too big. Then I’ll get that sewn onto the main skirt portion. I also think I need to slightly reshape the front panel – I think it flares out a little too much.
My skirt is definitely fuller looking than the comic but I’m ok with that, I wanted it to look formal and I think the fuller skirt with this really heavy, thick, luxe fabric does that.
Goals this week:
1. Take up hip drape thing, get it sewn onto top of skirt
2. Reshape front panel, get it sewn onto the other skirt panels
3. Attach all to bodice
4. Put zipper in
That’s it, that’s all I’m aiming for — at least getting it where I can zip it up and have it on. Once I get to that point I can attach the sleeves, finish the collar and install the bodice lining. Chase is working on 3d models for the necklace and belt buckle.
I was really hoping to have this done in time to include in the white backdrop shoots… but that’s why I’m having to slow down, because I’m WAAAAY behind on white backdrop shoots. I just kinda realized the other day I should’ve started over thanksgiving and now it’s going to be an uphill battle to have photos of everything before doing my year-end wrap ups.
I made up a schedule and we’re going to start tomorrow. I really didn’t want to shoot on weeknights but that’s what we’ll have to do. 2 tomorrow, 2 thursday or wednesday, 4 on sunday — then the rest over christmas and NYE weekend. Not sure I’ll get to finish honeymoon leia in time, but I’ll try.
Other than that nothing to really talk about.
We did do something really fun yesterday but I can’t post pics yet. But here’s a sneak peek.
Also I binged the whole Scott Pilgrim Takes Off series on netflix and it’s so cute, I don’t to spoil it, if you liked the movie definitely watch it. It’s got most of the original movie cast back doing the voices. It’s the same story but… not. And then of course I had to rewatch the movie. Hence today’s title and header.
